In order to develop natural sources which prevent dental caries, we investigated the effects of Terminalia chebula Retz. on the groeth, acid production, membrane permeability and glucosyltransferase(GTase)of Streptococcus mutans JC-2 in broth
system.
The water and methanol extract of Terminalia chebula Retz. showed antimicrobial activity against S.mutans JC-2 in broth system. Especially, its water extract had the most significant inhibithion activity at 1000 and 2000ppm of concentration.
The water extract of Terminalia chebula Retz. inhibited the activity of GTase and then showed 40.2, 43.3 and 78.8% inhibition rate at 500, 1000 and 2000ppm of concentration, respectively. Also its methanol extract showed 40.2, 83.8 and 91.9%
repectively.
The amount of leakaged cytosolic companents of S.mutans JC-2 increased according to the concentration of Terminalia chebula Retz.
